BVS Fitness Centre will be hosting a Dawn and Dusk Group Exercise Challenge from October 1st to November 2nd.
The goal is to collect three stars per week!
- Morning, evening and all Friday classes are worth 1 star!
- Sign-up for our November Nutrition Lunch & Learn and get two bonus stars!
Every week during the challenge, we will be drawing a name from all registered participants who collected tree stars for a small prize. At the end of the challenge, all participants who have met the minimum requirements to complete the challenge will be entered into the grand prize draw (not to mention bragging rights!).
Take this opportunity this fall to create a healthy habit that you can carry with you throughout the New Year!
If you have any questions or are interested in signing up, let us know at the front desk!
Whether we’re waiting in line at the grocery store or killing time between meetings, Kenneth Hansraj from the National Library of Medicine has these two bits of advice for those of us who find ourselves frequently looking down at our phones:
- Look down at your device with your eyes. No need to bend your neck!
- Exercise: Move your head from left to right several times. Use your hands to provide resistance and push your head against them, first forward and then backward. Stand in a doorway with your arms extended and push your chest forward to strengthen “the muscles of good posture.”
For more information on “Text Neck” and the ways in which frequently looking down at our phone is affecting the health of your spine, check out this article by The Washington Post .
A quick round-up of some of our favourite things this month, which all happen to be apps!
Runtastic is a fantastic free app that uses a GPS platform to track how far you’re running or cycling as well as the changes in elevation. This app will save your routes as well as help you plan new ones while being a part of a growing running/cycling community that engages with and supports one another.
I promise this app will help you discover new hikes and trails! You can easily tailor your search by difficulty, length, elevation gains, scenery (lakes, rivers, forests, etc.) or even suitability (dog friendly, kids friendly, wheelchair accessibility)!
Do you know about an even better hiking/trail app? Stop by the front desk and let me know!
“The best fitness and wellness app in the world right now!”, says Tammi who loves this app that was purchased by Underarmour for $475 million. With this app you can track your workouts, search for new workouts, and track your diet all in one place.
I have been on this app for about three years now and I absolutely love it especially for those moments when I find myself getting overwhelmed. Whether you’re starting a meditation practice for the very first time or are looking for some moments of peace and calm in your busy life, this app is an excellent way to step into meditation without any pressure.

If you’re looking to get outside and make friends this summer, Calgary has some awesome adult sports clubs and beer leagues for people of all abilities and ages to choose from!
The Calgary Sport and Social Club offers everything from Ultimate Frisbee to Beach Volleyball to Lawn Bowling and tons of sports and activities in between. League players choose the sport that they want to play and the day of the week that they want to play it. There are also over 30 tournaments to choose from in a variety of sports offered throughout the year. Whether you’re playing in a league or tournament, you can register as a team, with a few friends or as an individual, choosing from a variety of skill levels.
Meetups are free and bring like minded people together for sport, fitness, and social activities. There is no commitment or additional cost – a coordinator posts dates/times/locations for you to meet up with others who are interested in the same activity. This is a great way to meet people in the area who enjoy doing the same things you do.
Examples of Meet Ups
Drop in soccer
Get out and SUP (stand up paddleboard)
Strike Combat Archery
The University of Calgary offers both Intramural and Sport Clubs that are open to the general public with a wide variety of programs and activities to choose from. From Climbing to Quidditch to Triathlon training, there is definitely something for everybody!
